Columbia is a great place to be an Etherite. There are students everywhere, and people don't look at you askance when you tell them that you're a scientist. The city has become a bastion of sorts to the SoE; they have used the Red Campus as a meeting place for symposiums and other major events. Mages awakening with the university system and taking a shining towards the more fantastic technologies will be grabbed up quickly by the Sons, who have ingratiated themselves within the university on a professorial level. In addition characters from the Midwest who have been doing more rural research may find the Red Campus a pleasant respite from the wilds of the prairie.
